The third annual Kellogg Creek BioBlitz will be held on May 16th, 2026! Help us to document the plants, birds, insects, and other wildlife that are currently present in and around the soon-to-be restored Kellogg Creek! Last year, 75 volunteers documented over 171 different species of plants, birds, fungi, fish and more in the natural areas surrounding the Kellogg Impoundment during our 2 hour surveys and we can’t wait to see what we find this year! Keep reading to learn more about the BioBlitz and how to register!

During the Kellogg Creek BioBlitz, volunteers will join a group with a specific focus (like birds, plants or insects) that will be led by a local expert who can help with identification and share their vast knowledge and passion on the subject! We have a lot of exciting group options this year that you can read about on our registration page. Survey groups will document their findings using the free iNaturalist app during the two hour survey and then reconvene to share their findings with the group and enjoy a celebratory lunch provided by the Watersheds Council!

The Bioblitz is open to everyone! You don’t need to be an expert naturalist or have experience with iNaturalist to participate – we have local experts that will lead your group to help with identification and data submission.

When: Saturday, May 16th, 2026 from 9: 30 am-12:30 pm; surveys will take place from 10-12, with a celebration (lunch provided!) afterwards.

Where: We will meet inside at Milwaukie Presbyterian Church and groups will split off to survey different locations around the Kellogg Impoundment including the Milwaukie Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, Kronberg Park, and along the Trolley Trail.

What to bring: Please wear weather-appropriate attire and bring water to help stay hydrated during the survey! The BioBlitz will take place rain or shine, and we will be outside for approximately 2 hours during the survey. If you plan on submitting observations on your phone, bring your phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded! There are resources on the BioBlitz FAQ page on how to use iNaturalist, and we will go over it as a group before the survey. If you have a camera and would like to help take photos of observations and the survey itself, bring that!

What we provide: Coffee and light refreshments in the morning. Lunch and refreshments to celebrate afterwards! We also have a limited supply of boots, waders, binoculars, and rain coats to loan out if needed. You will have an opportunity when registering to indicate if you would like to borrow any gear.

Health & safety: We will be both inside and outside during this event and will be following current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required at this event. Please stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.

Accessibility: Accessibility is described in detail in the descriptions of the different Bioblitz interest groups on the registration page. In general trails in the Milwaukie Presbyterian Church Sanctuary are unpaved, sometimes steep and may include stairs. Kronberg Park and Dogwood Park are accessed via city sidewalks and have both paved and gravel trails. We will also be conducting surveys from the Trolly Trail, which is paved, wheelchair accessible and flat. If you have specific questions about accessibility, or require accommodations to participate, let us know! You can email Peyton at peyton@ncwatersheds.org.
