Site Tours of the Kellogg Creek Restoration and Community Enhancement Project!

We have been having a lot of fun taking people on tours of the Kellogg Creek Restoration and Community Enhancement Project site this year! On these tours, we usually start off on the bridge in Milwaukie Bay Park and take a moment to check out Kellogg Dam, which sits just underneath the 99E bridge. We talk about the history of the dam (it was built in the 1850s!) and how the dam removal project go started- with many thanks to our project partners, the Oregon Department of Transportation, the City of Milwaukie and American Rivers.

From left to right: Senator Jeff Merkley and Neil Schulman at Milwaukie Bay Park; Students in PSU’s Environmental Professionals Program view the impoundment; Senator Ron Wyden and Neil Schulman across from the Kellogg Dam; Staff from NOAA and USFWS pose for a picture after a tour.

We also like to walk over to the pedestrian bridge that runs underneath the Orange line, which has a great view of the Kellogg impoundment. While it’s not much to look at now, we are excited to start reimagining what that space will look like after the dam is removed and the area is restored! If you have a group interested in taking a site tour and learning more about the Kellogg Creek Restoration and Community Enhancement Project- please email Peyton and peyton@ncwatersheds.org. We talk about everything from the start of the project, our partners and supporters, to where the project is now and what some of the big challenges will be coming up, as well as more ways for you and your community to get involved! Site tours are accessible- we stay on sidewalks and pedestrian trails the entire time, and available in additional languages upon request.
