Back in 2021, the City of Milwaukie got to work repaving Lake Road, which happens to run right by our office, and parallel to Kellogg Creek. What many people don’t know is that they used pervious pavement to repave this street! Pervious pavement is an excellent alternative to impervious pavement when it comes to stormwater management for healthy streams and rivers. So as we head into the rainy season, we wanted to shout out this awesome project for those who may have missed it. Below we break down the major differences between pervious and impervious pavement.
| Pervious Pavement | Impervious Pavement |
|---|---|
| Water can percolate through pervious pavement | Water cannot penetrate impervious pavement |
| Pervious pavement filters pollutants from runoff before it enters waterways | Runoff picks up pollutants on impervious pavement and transports them to waterways |
| Decreases flood risk | Increased risk of flooding |
| Improved water table recharging | Reduced water table recharging |
